Members Ratify Contract
It was a recurring story these days: the City of Ontario was $65M in the red. Local 3061 members, however were still smarting from years of failing to keep pace with rising costs and at the negotiating table trying to get blood from a turnip.
Though they weren't able to make any financial progress, they were able to get a contract without any cuts. In addition, the one year agreement improved their rights in such areas as seniority, sick leave, call back, and jury duty. They also garnered substantial goodwill by sacrificing one year's worth of merit increases and developing protective temporary furlough provisions. The agreement also provides a great opportunity to bring formerly contracted work back in-house.
The greatest benefit of all, though, was a renewed sense of member participation and collective action that positions AFSCME to make even greater strides when finances improve in the future. The cpntract was signed on September 4, 2009.

AFSCME vs SBPEA
It Does Make a Difference.
The San Bernardino Public Employees Association (SBPEA) is seeking to change the certain
members from AFSCME Local 3061 to SBPEA. We are opposing this switch and have appealed
to the Public Employees Relations Board (PERB). Their decision is expected within the next few
weeks or months.
Many members were surprised that SBPEA used information cards they were asked to sign as
a petition to change unions. This deceptive tactic has made many members leery of SBPEA.
Here is why you should oppose to the switch:
* San Bernardino County employees run SBPEA. Its Board of Directors has 15 seats for San
Bernardino county members and 10 seats for the other 20+ agencies it represents.
Ontario employees run AFSCME Local 3061. Our Executive Board is made up of Ontario
employees exclusively.
* Its Board of Directors fill vacancies on the SBPEA Board. In AFSCME, we, the members fill
vacancies on the Board.
* SBPEA is a Technical/Management group that represents our supervisors. Would you be
comfortable with your supervisor representing your best interests?
* There is strength in numbers. SBPEA represents nearly17,000 employees in Southern
California. AFSCME represents over one million public employees across the country. Local
3061 is able to focus on Ontario’s issues with the backing and support of the District
Council and the International Union.
* AFSCME is the best of both worlds. We have local control by the membership and the support
and resources of one of the largest Unions in the Country.
Take a stand with AFSCME Local 3061 against
SBPEA efforts to divide us.
Together we are stronger!
