To confront the anti-worker forces against us, nearly 6,000 AFSCME delegates, alternatives and facilitators gathered at the 37th International Convention at Chicago McCormick Place ready to take on a bold, new game plan to fight back and win.

The 21st Century Initiative, created after a two-year examination of our union from top to bottom, will take center stage. Its prime purpose: to increase member involvement, grow the union and make real gains in the workplace, at the ballot box and in the halls of power. The delegates from Local 901 had a pivotal role in the policy making.

For the first time AFSCME requested that we become a part of the closing session. It was an honor as your president to deliver one of the closing remarks to 6,000 of our brothers and sisters. My remarks were focused on our commitment to our comminutes, children and seniors through recreation.

Well, there’s an all-out attack on the public sector, whether it’s the privatization of public services, tax handouts for the super-wealth or laws that starve government programs of essential funding. We must wage an aggressive campaign to educate the public, the media and the politicians about the roles that we play, and the role that effective government plays in all of our lives.

It is time to come together and make Local 901 strong enough to fight off any attack.

Join us this weekend on August 20, 2006, at our summer party. We will have picture and other information from the National Convention. Hope to see you there.

In solidarity
