About District Council 36

An affiliate of AFSCME International in Washington D.C., AFSCME District Council 36 was chartered in 1969 and today extends across the Southland, from Los Angeles to Orange County to San Diego.  Our democratic, member-driven union advocates for fairness, opportunity and prosperity for our members, because at Council 36, workers’ rights are human rights.  Particularly in this pro-corporate political climate in which we face an unprecedented economic divide between the haves and have-nots, Council 36 is committed to defending the rights of working Americans to live and retire in dignity.

Mission Statement:

We are the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) District Council 36 – a fully democratic, nonprofit labor organization representing more than 55 autonomous Local Unions throughout Southern California. We advocate, and when necessary, agitate, for the rights, protections, and dignity of AFSCME memvers and for the preservation of the middle class.  Most of our members directly serve taxpayers in local government agencies and nonprofit organizations,  with a common commitment to enabling our communities to thrive in a just society with equal access, treatment, and opportunity for all.
