Five recent contracts successfully negotiated, Sept. 2016

At the Jewish Federation and its affiliated agencies – Builders of Jewish Education, Jewish Big Brothers Big Sisters of Los Angeles, and Jewish Community Foundation – management came to the table offering a 1% wage increase for each of the next three years. Ultimately, we won contract increases of 3.5%, 2%, and 2%, and worked with Federation Campaign Associates (CAs) to craft management's initial proposed CA incentive pay plan into a plan they could accept. In addition, we won more paid days for jury duty and language on flexible start times, plus a compromise from management on their projected timeline for approving or denying vacation requests. Bargaining Team: Gary Fayman, Brenton Chapman, Gwenn-Drucker Flait, Elina Tilipman, Jason Harris

At the Jewish Vocational Service bargaining table, management initially proposed a 1%, 1%, 1% pay raise schedule – which would have left the lowest-paid employees below the L.A. City minimum wage in 2018! They also wanted to reduced sick leave accumulation from 12 to 9 days/year, and eliminate the ½ sick bank cash-out at retirement. We successfully fought them on these two proposed take-aways, and won wages increases of 2%, 2%, and 2% plus a new Service Award Benefit gift card program. Bargaining Team: Charlie Orlowski, Jose Avendano

For our members at Jewish Family Service, we won wage increases of 2.5%, 2.5%, and 2.5%, in contrast to the 2%, 1%,1% that management wanted to give us. In addition, we won an increase in the Employer cap on what it pays for our health insurance; we protected overtime pay after 7.5 hours per day and 37.5 hours per week vs. management's proposal of OT pay after 8hr/day and 40 hr/week; and we gained “exempt” status and more flexible work hours for Licensed Social Workers and Licensed Marriage and Family Therapists. Bargaining Team: Alexandra Booke, Leslie Brandes, Jayme Taylor

The Jewish Vocational Services GAIN unit negotiations were a one-year “wage re-opener.” We won a wage increase of 2.5% for 2016, and maintained Kaiser Permanente insurance at no monthly premium for employee coverage. Bargaining Team: Nenesha Brand, Antoinette Pappilli, Selin Petrosians

At the Westside Jewish Community Center, we kept bargaining till we won raises of 2.5%, 2.5%, and 3%, with the health insurance premium guaranteed at $15/month for all three years. Bargaining Team: Leora Javaheri-Far, Zhanna Polyachenko, Laura Zimmerman

In 2015 we negotiated a three-year contract with Silverlake Independent JCC, winning wage increases there of 4%, 4%, 4%. We maintained Kaiser health insurance at reasonable cost. Bargaining Team: Judith Jimenez, Evelia Ontiveros, Cheryl Williams
