AFSCME Virtual Convention: Day 1 & 2 Recap

Black Lives Matter and the COVID-19 pandemic were common topics discussed on the first day of AFSCME’s 44th International Convention. Day one began with Dr. Reverend William J. Barber talking about some of the issues that the country is currently facing. He spoke about how essential and frontline workers are extremely important to this country, especially during this pandemic, and how AFSCME is continuing to fight to protect these members. “We call them essential but treat them like they’re expendable,” said Dr.

PLAC Meeting Part Two

We are having another PLAC meeting this Saturday at 2PM via Zoom. This is a great opportunity to question candidates about how they plan to better your workplace and/or community. Make sure your voice is heard!

*SIP Update*

The Los Angeles City Separation Incentive program closed yesterday at 3PM. At this time, the City Administrative Office is reviewing all applications to verify whether or not we reached the 1,300 threshold. It may take some time before we get the final numbers, so please be patient with us. As soon as we get the final numbers we will post an update on the AFSCME District Council 36 website as well as our social media pages. So, stay tuned!

Big Wins for Local 800

UNION WINS

Local 800 has had so many achievements so far this year. Here are just a few:

• JVS GAIN won a $13,000 back pay settlement, to be distributed among several current and former Local 800 members, and a 2% wage increase for 14 union members. This happened after two Local 800 members informed the Union that JVS was systematically paying below Union contract rates. Management initially denied the problem, but, under threat of impending arbitration, settled on the Union’s terms.

Virtual Secretary-Treasurer Training

We were planning on holding our secretary-treasurer training in April, but of course the Coronavirus ended that possibility. So now we have rescheduled the training for August 8. This training is a great way to learn about how the financial side of your Local should operate.
