Resolutions Adopted at 27th Biennial Convention

AFSCME District Council 36 stands for Freedom from Harassment, Discrimination and Racism in the Workplace and in Union Business

WHEREAS:
The American Federation of State, County, and Municipal Employees (AFSCME) believes in and promotes fairness and equality for all; and

WHEREAS:
AFSCME works to promote policies that prohibit harassment, discrimination and retaliation in employment for our members; and

WHEREAS:
AFSCME works to promote policies that affirm the rights and fair treatment of those we come into contact within our work; and

WHEREAS:
Racism persists in American institutions, and economic and political systems operate to reinforce existing inequities, often in ways not fully acknowledged nor understood; and

WHEREAS:
AFSCME’s past, present and future are deeply rooted in the fight against racism and the struggle to build the bridge connecting labor rights, economic rights, human rights and civil rights for all; and

WHEREAS:
To confront racism, we must first repair and reform the systems in which we daily work that undermine fairness and reinforce bias.

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED:
That AFSCME DC 36 hereby adopts this resolution to affirm our belief that all people deserve freedom from discrimination, harassment, and racial bias in the workplace; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That AFSCME DC 36 affirms our belief that all people deserve freedom from discrimination, harassment, and racial bias while participating in Union activities; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED:
That AFSCME DC 36, as an employer, commits to protect all Council employees/ members from any act of discrimination, harassment, or racial bias, and to provide a safe workplace for all; and

BE IT FINALLY RESOLVED:
That AFSCME DC 36 develops a strategic plan for implementing an Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion policy for its workforce and member leadership that provides the guidance necessary for real and meaningful change.
