After refusing to settle for less than they deserve, AFSCME Local 1895 members secure a fair contract with the City of Lawndale.

On Saturday, April 13, AFSCME District Council 36 held an amazing new steward training with more than 50 members from over a dozen different locals unions.

Six AFSCME Local Unions representing more than ten thousand Los Angeles City employees have ratified new union contracts with robust wage increases.

Our theme for our 27th Biennial Convention was Celebrating AFSCME 36 Heroes. We wanted to highlight some of the amazing work our members have been doing in the workplace and in the community.

Dear Union Family,

At our 27th Biennial Convention this past weekend, we elected the 2021-2023 Executive Board. Congratulations to this new set of leaders!

It has been a challenging year for District Council 36, between the global pandemic and a move into new headquarters. The outgoing Executive Board did an incredible amount of work to provide members a beautiful, new space to help AFSCME grow. And the convention committee, its volunteers, and staff, produced an event that pulled us all together, after being apart for far too long.

Our siblings at UNAC/UHCP are in a tough contract fight with Kaiser Permanente. The Council 36 Executive Board voted unanimously to adopt a resolution in support of UNAC/UHCP.

AFSCME District Council 36, on behalf of our union members in Southern California, recognizes that choosing to purchase/offer Kaiser Permanente Health Benefits improves the health needs of our members and their families, but also supports the best jobs and the best care needed for our collective health as a labor community.

We are excited to report that Governor Gavin Newsom has defeated the recall effort, with 66 percent of California residents voting no. Without a doubt, Union members are the reason why Governor Newsom was able to win this recall election. AFSCME members were at the forefront of this campaign, leading the charge against an anti-worker agenda. Thank you to our staff, International Union, and most of all, our members for the time and energy you all dedicated to this effort.

It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of AFSCME Local 3061 member Ruben Wong. He passed away on Monday due to complications from COVID-19. He is survived by his wife and three children. Ruben has been an AFSCME brother and proud sanitation driver for the City of Ontario since 2008.

Our 27th biennial convention is  October 16-17. There will be some training/events happening on Friday Oct 15.

This year’s theme is ‘Celebrating AFSCME 36 Heroes’ because after a long, tough year, you deserve to be celebrated! Nominate yourself or your coworkers to be recognized at convention. Email daisha@afscme36.org with a paragraph or two about the heroic work you or your coworkers have been doing at work or in your community, along with any photos you have.

Council 36 is sad to hear about the passing of AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka.

Trumka has been a fierce economic and social justice advocate for decades. Throughout his career, he fought for immigration and civil rights. He was dedicated to fighting for workers’ rights and his leadership will be greatly missed.

Join us for our Recall Election training on August 5 at 6PM via Zoom. As you may already know, there will be a recall election for Governor Newsom soon.
